As we dicussed in the last article, Backgammon is a game of skill and good luck. The goal is to shift your checkers safely around the game board to your inner board and at the same time your opponent moves their checkers toward their inside board in the opposite direction. With competing player checkers moving in opposite directions there is bound to be conflict and the requirement for particular techniques at specific times. Here are the two final Backgammon tactics to round out your game.

The Priming Game Plan

If the goal of the blocking tactic is to slow down the opponent to shift her checkers, the Priming Game plan is to absolutely barricade any activity of the opposing player by creating a prime – ideally 6 points in a row. The competitor’s checkers will either get bumped, or end up in a bad position if he at all attempts to leave the wall. The trap of the prime can be setup anywhere between point two and point 11 in your half of the board. As soon as you’ve successfully built the prime to block the activity of your opponent, your opponent doesn’t even get a chance to roll the dice, that means you shift your pieces and toss the dice yet again. You’ll be a winner for sure.

The Back Game Plan

The objectives of the Back Game strategy and the Blocking Game plan are similar – to hurt your competitor’s positions in hope to better your odds of succeeding, but the Back Game tactic utilizes seperate techniques to do that. The Back Game tactic is commonly used when you are far behind your competitor. To compete in Backgammon with this strategy, you need to hold two or more points in table, and to hit a blot (a single piece) late in the game. This plan is more complex than others to use in Backgammon because it requires careful movement of your pieces and how the chips are relocated is partially the outcome of the dice toss.
