In very simple terms, there are 3 chief game plans employed. You want to be able to hop between techniques quickly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This consists of assembling a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at least as deep as you can manage, to block in the opponent’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most suitable course of action at the begining of the match. You can assemble the wall anyplace between your 11-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the game advances.

The Blitz

This involves locking your home board as quickly as possible while keeping your competitor on the bar. i.e., if your challenger tosses an early two and shifts one checker from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then roll a five-five, you can play 6/1 6/1 8/3 eight/three. Your opponent is then in serious dire straits seeing that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have locked half your inside board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have two or more checkers in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor is a point filled by at a minimum 2 of your pieces.) It would be employed when you are decidedly behind as this strategy much improves your chances. The best locations for anchor spots are close to your competitor’s smaller points and either on adjacent points or with a single point separating them. Timing is critical for a competent backgame: besides, there’s no reason having 2 nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then forced to dismantle this right away, while your opposer is shifting their checkers home, owing to the fact that you do not have other spare pieces to shift! In this situation, it is better to have checkers on the bar so that you might maintain your position until your challenger provides you an opportunity to hit, so it can be an excellent idea to try and get your competitor to get them in this situation!
