In very simple terms, there are 3 main tactics used. You must be agile enough to hop between techniques instantly as the action of the game unfolds.
The Blockade
This is comprised of assembling a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at least as deep as you are able to manage, to lock in the opponent’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most suitable procedure at the begining of the match. You can create the wall anywhere within your eleven-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the match progresses.
The Blitz
This is composed of closing your home board as quick as possible while keeping your challenger on the bar. i.e., if your opposer tosses an early two and shifts one piece from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then toss a 5-5, you will be able to play six/one 6/1 eight/three eight/three. Your opposer is then in serious difficulty since they have two pieces on the bar and you have locked half your home board!
The Backgame
This tactic is where you have 2 or higher checkers in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor is a position consisting of at least 2 of your checkers.) It needs to be employed when you are significantly behind as this plan greatly improves your circumstances. The best areas for anchors are near your competitor’s lower points and either on adjacent points or with a single point in between. Timing is crucial for an effectual backgame: after all, there’s no point having two nice anchors and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then required to dismantle this right away, while your competitor is moving their pieces home, taking into account that you do not have any other additional checkers to move! In this case, it is more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you are able to maintain your position up until your competitor provides you a chance to hit, so it can be an excellent idea to attempt and get your challenger to hit them in this case!
