In extraordinarily general terms, there are three fundamental strategies used. You need to be able to hop between game plans instantly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is comprised of building a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at a minimum as thick as you might achieve, to lock in the competitor’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most acceptable course of action at the begining of the game. You can create the wall anyplace inbetween your eleven-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the game advances.

The Blitz

This is composed of locking your home board as quick as possible while keeping your challenger on the bar. i.e., if your challenger tosses an early two and shifts one checker from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then roll a 5-5, you are able to play six/one six/one eight/three 8/3. Your competitor is then in big-time dire straits since they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have locked half your inside board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have two or more pieces in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor is a point filled by at least 2 of your pieces.) It must be used when you are significantly behind as it much improves your opportunities. The better locations for anchor spots are near your opponent’s lower points and either on abutting points or with a single point separating them. Timing is crucial for a competent backgame: at the end of the day, there’s no reason having 2 nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then required to break up this straight away, while your opposer is getting their checkers home, considering that you do not have any other spare checkers to move! In this situation, it is better to have pieces on the bar so that you might preserve your position until your competitor provides you a chance to hit, so it can be a good idea to try and get your challenger to hit them in this case!
