In exceptionally simple terms, there are three basic game plans used. You want to be agile enough to switch techniques quickly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This comprises of creating a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at least as deep as you are able to manage, to lock in the opponent’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most adequate strategy at the start of the game. You can create the wall anywhere between your eleven-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the game continues.

The Blitz

This is comprised of closing your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your opposer on the bar. For example, if your opposer tosses an early 2 and shifts one checker from your 1-point to your three-point and you then roll a 5-5, you can play 6/1 6/1 eight/three 8/3. Your competitor is now in serious dire straits due to the fact that they have two checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inner board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have two or more checkers in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor is a position consisting of at least 2 of your pieces.) It must be employed when you are significantly behind as this plan greatly improves your opportunities. The strongest places for anchor spots are close to your competitor’s lower points and also on adjoining points or with one point in between. Timing is critical for a competent backgame: after all, there’s no point having 2 nice anchors and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to dismantle this straight away, while your challenger is moving their pieces home, seeing that you do not have any other extra checkers to move! In this situation, it’s more tolerable to have pieces on the bar so that you might maintain your position up till your opponent provides you a chance to hit, so it can be a good idea to attempt and get your challenger to hit them in this situation!
