In astonishingly general terms, there are three fundamental strategies used. You want to be able to switch tactics quickly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is comprised of building a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you are able to achieve, to block in the opponent’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most suitable tactic at the begining of the match. You can build the wall anywhere inbetween your eleven-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the game advances.

The Blitz

This is composed of locking your home board as fast as as you can while keeping your challenger on the bar. For example, if your opponent rolls an early 2 and moves one checker from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then toss a 5-5, you will be able to play six/one 6/1 8/3 eight/three. Your competitor is then in serious difficulty because they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have locked half your inner board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have 2 or more anchors in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a point consisting of at a minimum two of your pieces.) It should be used when you are decidedly behind as it much improves your circumstances. The best locations for anchors are near your opponent’s smaller points and either on adjoining points or with a single point separating them. Timing is important for an effective backgame: after all, there’s no reason having two nice anchors and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then required to break apart this right away, while your opponent is moving their checkers home, owing to the fact that you do not have any other spare pieces to move! In this case, it’s better to have pieces on the bar so that you might preserve your position up until your opposer provides you a chance to hit, so it will be a great idea to attempt and get your challenger to get them in this case!
