In astonishingly general terms, there are 3 basic techniques employed. You want to be able to hop between strategies almost instantly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This is comprised of creating a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at least as deep as you can manage, to lock in the opponent’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most adequate strategy at the begining of the game. You can assemble the wall anywhere within your 11-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the match advances.

The Blitz

This is comprised of closing your home board as quickly as as you can while keeping your competitor on the bar. For example, if your challenger tosses an early two and moves one piece from your one-point to your 3-point and you then roll a 5-5, you can play 6/1 six/one eight/three 8/3. Your opposer is then in serious calamity due to the fact that they have two pieces on the bar and you have locked half your home board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have 2 or more checkers in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor is a point filled by at least 2 of your pieces.) It should be employed when you are decidedly behind as it greatly improves your chances. The strongest areas for anchors are near your competitor’s lower points and either on adjoining points or with a single point separating them. Timing is crucial for a powerful backgame: besides, there’s no point having 2 nice anchors and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then required to dismantle this straight away, while your opponent is moving their checkers home, considering that you do not have other extra checkers to shift! In this case, it’s more tolerable to have pieces on the bar so that you might maintain your position up until your challenger provides you an opportunity to hit, so it will be a wonderful idea to try and get your opponent to get them in this case!
