In extraordinarily simple terms, there are three basic strategies employed. You want to be agile enough to switch game plans instantly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This consists of assembling a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at least as deep as you can manage, to lock in the competitor’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most adequate tactic at the begining of the game. You can create the wall anyplace between your 11-point and your 2-point and then move it into your home board as the game advances.

The Blitz

This consists of closing your home board as quickly as as you can while keeping your opposer on the bar. For example, if your competitor tosses an early two and shifts one checker from your one-point to your 3-point and you then toss a five-five, you will be able to play six/one six/one eight/three 8/3. Your opposer is then in serious calamity because they have two checkers on the bar and you have closed half your home board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have two or higher checkers in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor is a point occupied by at a minimum two of your pieces.) It would be employed when you are significantly behind as it greatly improves your chances. The better areas for anchors are near your opponent’s smaller points and either on adjacent points or with a single point separating them. Timing is important for a competent backgame: after all, there is no point having two nice anchors and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then required to dismantle this straight away, while your opposer is shifting their pieces home, considering that you do not have other additional pieces to move! In this situation, it’s better to have pieces on the bar so that you can maintain your position up till your opponent provides you a chance to hit, so it can be an excellent idea to attempt and get your opponent to get them in this case!
