In extraordinarily simple terms, there are three chief techniques employed. You must be agile enough to hop between techniques almost instantly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This comprises of creating a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at least as thick as you might manage, to lock in the opponent’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most suitable strategy at the begining of the match. You can create the wall anywhere inbetween your eleven-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the match advances.

The Blitz

This consists of locking your home board as quickly as as you can while keeping your opposer on the bar. e.g., if your competitor rolls an early two and shifts one piece from your 1-point to your three-point and you then toss a five-five, you can play 6/1 6/1 eight/three 8/3. Your opponent is now in big-time difficulty considering that they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have 2 or more pieces in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a point occupied by at least two of your checkers.) It should be employed when you are extremely behind as it much improves your opportunities. The best areas for anchors are close to your opponent’s lower points and also on abutting points or with a single point separating them. Timing is essential for a powerful backgame: besides, there is no reason having 2 nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then required to break down this straight away, while your competitor is shifting their checkers home, considering that you do not have any other additional checkers to move! In this situation, it’s more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you are able to preserve your position until your challenger gives you a chance to hit, so it may be an excellent idea to attempt and get your competitor to get them in this situation!
