In extraordinarily general terms, there are three fundamental tactics employed. You must be agile enough to switch game plans instantly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This comprises of creating a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you might manage, to lock in the competitor’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most suitable course of action at the begining of the game. You can create the wall anyplace inbetween your 11-point and your two-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the game advances.

The Blitz

This is composed of locking your home board as fast as possible while keeping your challenger on the bar. For example, if your opposer tosses an early 2 and shifts one checker from your 1-point to your three-point and you then toss a 5-5, you are able to play six/one 6/1 eight/three eight/three. Your challenger is then in big-time trouble considering that they have two checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have 2 or higher anchors in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor is a position occupied by at least 2 of your pieces.) It needs to be used when you are decidedly behind as it greatly improves your opportunities. The better areas for anchor spots are near your competitor’s lower points and either on abutting points or with a single point separating them. Timing is integral for a powerful backgame: besides, there’s no point having two nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break down this straight away, while your opposer is getting their pieces home, because you do not have any other spare pieces to move! In this case, it’s better to have pieces on the bar so that you are able to maintain your position up until your challenger gives you an opportunity to hit, so it can be an excellent idea to attempt and get your opposer to hit them in this case!
