In astonishingly simple terms, there are three basic tactics employed. You want to be able to switch strategies instantly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves building a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at a minimum as thick as you might achieve, to block in your opponent’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most acceptable strategy at the start of the match. You can assemble the wall anyplace within your eleven-point and your 2-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the game continues.

The Blitz

This is comprised of locking your home board as quick as possible while keeping your opposer on the bar. i.e., if your competitor rolls an early 2 and shifts one checker from your one-point to your 3-point and you then toss a five-five, you will be able to play 6/1 six/one eight/three 8/3. Your opponent is then in big-time dire straits since they have two checkers on the bar and you have locked half your inside board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have two or more checkers in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a position occupied by at least two of your checkers.) It should be employed when you are decidedly behind as this strategy greatly improves your chances. The strongest locations for anchor spots are close to your opponent’s lower points and also on abutting points or with a single point in between. Timing is crucial for an effectual backgame: besides, there’s no reason having 2 nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break up this straight away, while your opponent is moving their checkers home, taking into account that you do not have any other additional checkers to move! In this situation, it is better to have pieces on the bar so that you can maintain your position until your competitor gives you a chance to hit, so it can be an excellent idea to attempt and get your opposer to hit them in this situation!
