In astonishingly general terms, there are three main game plans used. You need to be able to switch techniques quickly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This comprises of assembling a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at a minimum as thick as you can achieve, to lock in the competitor’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most acceptable tactic at the start of the game. You can build the wall anyplace inbetween your 11-point and your 2-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the game continues.

The Blitz

This consists of closing your home board as fast as as you can while keeping your opponent on the bar. For example, if your challenger rolls an early two and moves one piece from your 1-point to your three-point and you then roll a 5-5, you can play six/one six/one eight/three 8/3. Your challenger is now in serious calamity considering that they have two checkers on the bar and you have closed half your home board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have two or more anchors in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor is a point occupied by at a minimum two of your checkers.) It needs to be employed when you are extremely behind as it greatly improves your circumstances. The better areas for anchor spots are near your opponent’s lower points and either on abutting points or with a single point separating them. Timing is integral for an effective backgame: besides, there is no point having two nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then required to dismantle this right away, while your challenger is getting their pieces home, owing to the fact that you do not have any other extra checkers to move! In this case, it’s more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you might maintain your position until your challenger provides you a chance to hit, so it can be a wonderful idea to try and get your competitor to get them in this situation!
