In astonishingly general terms, there are three main tactics employed. You must be agile enough to hop between game plans quickly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This comprises of creating a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at a minimum as thick as you can manage, to barricade in the competitor’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most adequate strategy at the begining of the game. You can create the wall anywhere between your 11-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the match advances.

The Blitz

This consists of closing your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your competitor on the bar. For example, if your challenger rolls an early 2 and moves one piece from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then roll a 5-5, you will be able to play six/one 6/1 eight/three eight/three. Your challenger is then in serious difficulty considering that they have two checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inner board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have two or higher anchors in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor spot is a position consisting of at least 2 of your pieces.) It must be used when you are significantly behind as it greatly improves your chances. The best areas for anchor spots are towards your opponent’s lower points and either on adjoining points or with one point separating them. Timing is integral for a powerful backgame: at the end of the day, there’s no reason having 2 nice anchors and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then required to break down this straight away, while your challenger is getting their pieces home, taking into account that you do not have any other additional checkers to shift! In this situation, it is more tolerable to have checkers on the bar so that you might preserve your position until your opponent provides you a chance to hit, so it can be an excellent idea to try and get your opposer to get them in this case!
