In extraordinarily simple terms, there are 3 fundamental strategies used. You must be agile enough to hop between strategies instantly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This comprises of assembling a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at least as deep as you might manage, to lock in the competitor’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most suitable procedure at the start of the game. You can build the wall anyplace between your 11-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the game advances.

The Blitz

This involves closing your home board as quick as possible while keeping your competitor on the bar. e.g., if your opposer tosses an early 2 and shifts one checker from your one-point to your three-point and you then toss a 5-5, you will be able to play six/one six/one eight/three 8/3. Your opponent is now in big-time difficulty taking into account that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inner board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have two or higher pieces in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor spot is a position consisting of at least 2 of your checkers.) It needs to be used when you are extremely behind as it greatly improves your opportunities. The better places for anchor spots are near your opponent’s lower points and also on adjacent points or with one point in between. Timing is crucial for an effective backgame: besides, there is no reason having two nice anchors and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then required to break apart this straight away, while your challenger is shifting their checkers home, considering that you don’t have other additional checkers to shift! In this situation, it’s better to have pieces on the bar so that you might preserve your position up until your competitor gives you an opportunity to hit, so it can be an excellent idea to attempt and get your competitor to hit them in this situation!
