In astonishingly simple terms, there are 3 main plans employed. You need to be agile enough to hop between tactics quickly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves assembling a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you might manage, to lock in the opponent’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most suitable tactic at the start of the match. You can create the wall anywhere between your eleven-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the game continues.

The Blitz

This is composed of closing your home board as quick as possible while keeping your challenger on the bar. For example, if your challenger rolls an early 2 and moves one piece from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then roll a five-five, you can play 6/1 six/one eight/three 8/3. Your opponent is now in serious trouble taking into account that they have two checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inner board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have two or more checkers in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor spot is a position occupied by at a minimum two of your checkers.) It must be used when you are decidedly behind as this action greatly improves your opportunities. The strongest places for anchor spots are near your opponent’s smaller points and either on adjacent points or with a single point separating them. Timing is integral for a powerful backgame: after all, there is no point having 2 nice anchors and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then required to break up this straight away, while your opponent is getting their pieces home, owing to the fact that you do not have any other spare pieces to move! In this situation, it’s more tolerable to have checkers on the bar so that you might maintain your position up till your opponent provides you an opportunity to hit, so it may be a great idea to try and get your challenger to get them in this case!
