In astonishingly general terms, there are three chief game plans used. You want to be agile enough to switch techniques almost instantly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This comprises of building a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at a minimum as deep as you can manage, to block in the opponent’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most acceptable strategy at the start of the game. You can build the wall anyplace inbetween your 11-point and your two-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the match advances.

The Blitz

This involves locking your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your opponent on the bar. For example, if your opposer tosses an early two and moves one checker from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then toss a five-five, you are able to play 6/1 6/1 8/3 8/3. Your opponent is then in serious calamity due to the fact that they have two checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inner board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have two or higher checkers in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor is a position occupied by at least 2 of your pieces.) It would be used when you are significantly behind as it much improves your circumstances. The strongest places for anchor spots are near your opponent’s smaller points and also on abutting points or with a single point in between. Timing is important for a competent backgame: besides, there is no reason having 2 nice anchors and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break up this straight away, while your challenger is getting their pieces home, considering that you don’t have any other additional pieces to shift! In this situation, it’s more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you are able to preserve your position up until your challenger gives you a chance to hit, so it can be an excellent idea to try and get your challenger to hit them in this situation!
