In astonishingly general terms, there are three chief tactics used. You must be able to switch strategies almost instantly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves building a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you might achieve, to lock in your opponent’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most adequate strategy at the start of the game. You can assemble the wall anyplace inbetween your 11-point and your 2-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the match continues.

The Blitz

This involves locking your home board as quick as possible while keeping your opposer on the bar. For example, if your challenger tosses an early two and shifts one piece from your 1-point to your three-point and you then toss a 5-5, you will be able to play six/one six/one eight/three 8/3. Your competitor is then in serious trouble considering that they have two checkers on the bar and you have locked half your inside board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have two or higher anchors in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a point consisting of at a minimum 2 of your checkers.) It needs to be used when you are significantly behind as it much improves your circumstances. The better places for anchors are close to your competitor’s lower points and either on abutting points or with a single point separating them. Timing is crucial for an effectual backgame: besides, there is no reason having two nice anchors and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break apart this straight away, while your opposer is getting their pieces home, because you don’t have any other additional checkers to move! In this case, it’s better to have pieces on the bar so that you can preserve your position up till your opponent provides you a chance to hit, so it may be a wonderful idea to attempt and get your challenger to get them in this case!
