In very general terms, there are 3 main strategies used. You need to be agile enough to switch game plans almost instantly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This comprises of building a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at a minimum as thick as you can manage, to barricade in your opponent’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most adequate tactic at the start of the match. You can assemble the wall anyplace between your 11-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the match progresses.

The Blitz

This involves closing your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your challenger on the bar. i.e., if your opponent rolls an early 2 and shifts one checker from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then toss a 5-5, you can play 6/1 six/one eight/three eight/three. Your challenger is now in serious difficulty due to the fact that they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have locked half your inner board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have 2 or higher checkers in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a position occupied by at a minimum 2 of your checkers.) It needs to be used when you are decidedly behind as it much improves your chances. The strongest areas for anchors are close to your opponent’s smaller points and also on abutting points or with a single point in between. Timing is essential for an effective backgame: besides, there is no point having 2 nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to dismantle this right away, while your challenger is shifting their checkers home, owing to the fact that you do not have any other additional pieces to shift! In this situation, it is more tolerable to have checkers on the bar so that you are able to preserve your position up until your opponent gives you a chance to hit, so it may be a good idea to try and get your opponent to get them in this case!
