In exceptionally general terms, there are 3 main game plans used. You want to be able to hop between game plans instantly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This comprises of assembling a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at a minimum as thick as you can achieve, to barricade in your competitor’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most acceptable strategy at the start of the game. You can create the wall anyplace within your 11-point and your 2-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the match progresses.

The Blitz

This is composed of locking your home board as quickly as as you can while keeping your opposer on the bar. e.g., if your competitor rolls an early two and moves one checker from your one-point to your 3-point and you then roll a 5-5, you will be able to play six/one 6/1 eight/three 8/3. Your competitor is then in big-time dire straits considering that they have two checkers on the bar and you have locked half your inner board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have 2 or more pieces in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor is a position filled by at least two of your checkers.) It needs to be used when you are extremely behind as it greatly improves your opportunities. The strongest places for anchors are towards your opponent’s smaller points and either on abutting points or with one point in between. Timing is integral for a competent backgame: at the end of the day, there is no point having two nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break up this right away, while your competitor is shifting their checkers home, taking into account that you don’t have any other additional checkers to shift! In this case, it’s more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you might maintain your position up until your challenger gives you a chance to hit, so it may be a wonderful idea to try and get your opponent to hit them in this case!
