In exceptionally simple terms, there are 3 fundamental game plans employed. You must be able to switch tactics instantly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of creating a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at a minimum as deep as you are able to manage, to barricade in the competitor’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most suitable tactic at the begining of the game. You can create the wall anywhere inbetween your 11-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the game continues.

The Blitz

This involves closing your home board as fast as possible while keeping your opponent on the bar. e.g., if your challenger tosses an early 2 and moves one piece from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then toss a 5-5, you will be able to play 6/1 6/1 8/3 8/3. Your competitor is now in serious trouble because they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have closed half your inner board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have two or higher pieces in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor is a position filled by at least two of your pieces.) It should be played when you are significantly behind as this plan much improves your circumstances. The best places for anchors are near your opponent’s smaller points and either on adjacent points or with one point separating them. Timing is essential for an effectual backgame: at the end of the day, there’s no point having 2 nice anchors and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break apart this straight away, while your competitor is moving their pieces home, considering that you do not have any other spare pieces to shift! In this case, it is more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you can maintain your position until your challenger gives you an opportunity to hit, so it may be a wonderful idea to attempt and get your challenger to get them in this case!
