In very simple terms, there are 3 main plans employed. You must be agile enough to switch techniques quickly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This consists of building a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at least as deep as you can manage, to lock in the opponent’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most acceptable tactic at the start of the game. You can assemble the wall anywhere within your 11-point and your 2-point and then move it into your home board as the game progresses.

The Blitz

This is comprised of closing your home board as quickly as as you can while keeping your competitor on the bar. i.e., if your opposer rolls an early two and shifts one checker from your 1-point to your three-point and you then toss a five-five, you will be able to play 6/1 six/one 8/3 eight/three. Your competitor is now in serious difficulty taking into account that they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have locked half your inside board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have two or more pieces in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor is a point consisting of at a minimum 2 of your checkers.) It must be employed when you are decidedly behind as this strategy greatly improves your opportunities. The strongest places for anchor spots are towards your competitor’s lower points and also on adjoining points or with one point in between. Timing is integral for an effectual backgame: besides, there’s no point having two nice anchors and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break down this right away, while your competitor is getting their checkers home, considering that you do not have any other extra checkers to move! In this situation, it is more tolerable to have checkers on the bar so that you can maintain your position until your opponent provides you a chance to hit, so it will be a great idea to attempt and get your challenger to get them in this case!
