In very general terms, there are 3 main plans used. You must be agile enough to switch game plans instantly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of creating a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you are able to achieve, to barricade in the competitor’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most adequate course of action at the begining of the match. You can build the wall anyplace within your eleven-point and your two-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the game progresses.

The Blitz

This consists of closing your home board as quickly as possible while keeping your competitor on the bar. i.e., if your challenger tosses an early 2 and shifts one checker from your one-point to your three-point and you then roll a 5-5, you will be able to play 6/1 six/one 8/3 8/3. Your opponent is now in big-time calamity due to the fact that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have locked half your inside board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have two or more checkers in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor is a position consisting of at least 2 of your pieces.) It must be employed when you are significantly behind as this plan greatly improves your chances. The best places for anchor spots are close to your opponent’s lower points and also on abutting points or with one point separating them. Timing is critical for a powerful backgame: besides, there is no point having two nice anchors and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break down this straight away, while your competitor is shifting their checkers home, taking into account that you do not have any other extra pieces to shift! In this case, it’s better to have pieces on the bar so that you are able to preserve your position up until your competitor gives you an opportunity to hit, so it may be a wonderful idea to attempt and get your competitor to hit them in this case!
