In very general terms, there are three basic game plans used. You need to be able to hop between techniques instantly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves assembling a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you are able to achieve, to lock in your opponent’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most acceptable course of action at the begining of the game. You can assemble the wall anywhere within your 11-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the match advances.

The Blitz

This consists of closing your home board as quick as possible while keeping your opposer on the bar. i.e., if your challenger rolls an early 2 and moves one piece from your one-point to your three-point and you then toss a 5-5, you can play six/one six/one 8/3 8/3. Your challenger is then in big-time difficulty considering that they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have closed half your home board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have two or higher anchors in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a point consisting of at least two of your checkers.) It should be used when you are significantly behind as this plan much improves your chances. The strongest locations for anchor spots are near your competitor’s lower points and either on abutting points or with a single point in between. Timing is integral for an effectual backgame: after all, there is no reason having 2 nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then required to break up this right away, while your challenger is shifting their pieces home, because you do not have any other spare checkers to shift! In this case, it is more tolerable to have checkers on the bar so that you can preserve your position until your opposer provides you a chance to hit, so it can be a good idea to try and get your competitor to hit them in this situation!
