In exceptionally general terms, there are three fundamental techniques employed. You must be able to hop between strategies instantly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of building a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at least as deep as you might manage, to lock in the opponent’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most acceptable tactic at the start of the game. You can assemble the wall anyplace within your eleven-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the match advances.

The Blitz

This is composed of closing your home board as quickly as possible while keeping your competitor on the bar. For example, if your opposer rolls an early 2 and shifts one checker from your one-point to your three-point and you then roll a five-five, you are able to play six/one 6/1 eight/three 8/3. Your competitor is now in serious calamity due to the fact that they have two pieces on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have two or higher anchors in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor is a point occupied by at a minimum two of your pieces.) It needs to be used when you are extremely behind as this strategy greatly improves your opportunities. The better areas for anchor spots are close to your opponent’s smaller points and also on abutting points or with one point separating them. Timing is crucial for a powerful backgame: at the end of the day, there is no reason having two nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then required to dismantle this straight away, while your challenger is moving their checkers home, seeing that you do not have any other spare pieces to shift! In this situation, it’s more tolerable to have checkers on the bar so that you can maintain your position until your competitor gives you an opportunity to hit, so it will be a good idea to attempt and get your challenger to hit them in this situation!
