In astonishingly simple terms, there are 3 fundamental game plans used. You must be able to switch techniques instantly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves creating a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at least as thick as you are able to manage, to block in the opponent’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most adequate strategy at the start of the game. You can build the wall anyplace inbetween your 11-point and your two-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the match advances.

The Blitz

This involves closing your home board as quickly as as you can while keeping your challenger on the bar. i.e., if your competitor tosses an early 2 and shifts one piece from your 1-point to your three-point and you then roll a five-five, you will be able to play 6/1 six/one eight/three 8/3. Your opponent is now in serious difficulty taking into account that they have two checkers on the bar and you have locked half your inside board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have two or more anchors in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor is a position consisting of at least two of your pieces.) It would be played when you are decidedly behind as this action greatly improves your opportunities. The better locations for anchors are towards your opponent’s lower points and also on adjoining points or with one point in between. Timing is crucial for an effectual backgame: besides, there is no reason having 2 nice anchors and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break apart this straight away, while your competitor is getting their checkers home, because you do not have any other extra pieces to shift! In this case, it’s better to have checkers on the bar so that you might maintain your position up until your opponent provides you an opportunity to hit, so it will be a good idea to try and get your challenger to hit them in this situation!
