In exceptionally general terms, there are 3 general techniques used. You need to be able to switch techniques instantly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves creating a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at least as deep as you might achieve, to lock in your competitor’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most suitable strategy at the begining of the game. You can build the wall anywhere within your 11-point and your two-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the game progresses.

The Blitz

This is composed of locking your home board as fast as possible while keeping your opposer on the bar. For example, if your challenger tosses an early 2 and shifts one piece from your 1-point to your three-point and you then toss a five-five, you will be able to play six/one six/one eight/three eight/three. Your challenger is then in serious dire straits since they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have two or higher checkers in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor is a point consisting of at least two of your pieces.) It needs to be used when you are decidedly behind as it much improves your circumstances. The better places for anchor spots are close to your opponent’s smaller points and also on adjacent points or with a single point in between. Timing is important for a competent backgame: besides, there is no point having 2 nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break apart this right away, while your competitor is shifting their checkers home, owing to the fact that you do not have any other extra checkers to move! In this situation, it’s more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you might preserve your position until your opposer provides you a chance to hit, so it will be a wonderful idea to try and get your opponent to hit them in this case!
