In extraordinarily simple terms, there are 3 chief strategies employed. You must be able to hop between tactics almost instantly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This comprises of creating a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at a minimum as deep as you are able to manage, to barricade in your competitor’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most adequate strategy at the begining of the match. You can build the wall anyplace within your eleven-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the game continues.

The Blitz

This is composed of closing your home board as quickly as as you can while keeping your competitor on the bar. i.e., if your challenger rolls an early 2 and shifts one piece from your 1-point to your three-point and you then toss a five-five, you can play six/one 6/1 eight/three eight/three. Your competitor is now in serious difficulty seeing that they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have two or more pieces in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor is a position consisting of at least two of your checkers.) It must be employed when you are extremely behind as it much improves your circumstances. The better areas for anchors are towards your competitor’s lower points and also on abutting points or with a single point in between. Timing is crucial for an effectual backgame: after all, there’s no point having two nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break down this straight away, while your opposer is getting their pieces home, because you don’t have any other extra pieces to move! In this case, it’s better to have checkers on the bar so that you can maintain your position up till your competitor gives you a chance to hit, so it may be a good idea to try and get your opposer to hit them in this case!
