In extraordinarily simple terms, there are 3 basic game plans employed. You need to be agile enough to hop between tactics almost instantly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves creating a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at a minimum as deep as you might manage, to block in your competitor’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most acceptable procedure at the start of the game. You can assemble the wall anyplace between your 11-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the game progresses.

The Blitz

This consists of locking your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your opposer on the bar. i.e., if your opposer tosses an early 2 and moves one piece from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then roll a five-five, you can play 6/1 6/1 8/3 eight/three. Your opposer is now in serious dire straits since they have two checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have 2 or more pieces in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor spot is a position consisting of at a minimum two of your checkers.) It must be played when you are decidedly behind as this strategy greatly improves your chances. The better locations for anchor spots are towards your opponent’s smaller points and also on adjoining points or with one point in between. Timing is critical for an effective backgame: at the end of the day, there’s no point having two nice anchors and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then forced to dismantle this straight away, while your opposer is moving their pieces home, because you do not have any other additional checkers to shift! In this case, it is more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you are able to preserve your position up until your competitor provides you a chance to hit, so it will be a good idea to attempt and get your competitor to hit them in this situation!
