In exceptionally simple terms, there are 3 fundamental game plans employed. You want to be agile enough to switch tactics quickly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of assembling a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at least as thick as you might achieve, to barricade in your opponent’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most acceptable tactic at the start of the game. You can create the wall anyplace within your 11-point and your 2-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the match progresses.

The Blitz

This is comprised of locking your home board as quickly as possible while keeping your opposer on the bar. For example, if your challenger tosses an early two and moves one piece from your 1-point to your three-point and you then toss a 5-5, you will be able to play 6/1 six/one 8/3 eight/three. Your challenger is then in big-time dire straits due to the fact that they have two checkers on the bar and you have locked half your home board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have two or more checkers in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor is a position consisting of at a minimum 2 of your checkers.) It would be employed when you are extremely behind as this strategy much improves your circumstances. The better places for anchors are near your opponent’s smaller points and also on adjacent points or with one point in between. Timing is important for an effectual backgame: besides, there’s no point having 2 nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then required to break apart this right away, while your opponent is moving their pieces home, taking into account that you do not have other additional pieces to shift! In this situation, it is better to have pieces on the bar so that you are able to maintain your position until your opponent gives you a chance to hit, so it can be an excellent idea to attempt and get your opponent to get them in this situation!
