In astonishingly general terms, there are three basic plans employed. You want to be agile enough to hop between techniques almost instantly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of building a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at least as thick as you are able to achieve, to barricade in your competitor’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most adequate course of action at the begining of the game. You can create the wall anywhere between your eleven-point and your 2-point and then move it into your home board as the game advances.

The Blitz

This consists of closing your home board as quick as possible while keeping your opposer on the bar. For example, if your challenger tosses an early two and moves one checker from your one-point to your 3-point and you then roll a five-five, you will be able to play 6/1 6/1 eight/three 8/3. Your opponent is then in serious dire straits since they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have locked half your inside board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have 2 or higher pieces in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a point consisting of at least 2 of your checkers.) It should be employed when you are decidedly behind as this strategy much improves your opportunities. The best locations for anchors are close to your competitor’s smaller points and also on abutting points or with one point in between. Timing is crucial for a competent backgame: besides, there is no point having 2 nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then required to dismantle this right away, while your opposer is moving their pieces home, taking into account that you don’t have other additional pieces to move! In this case, it is more tolerable to have pieces on the bar so that you are able to preserve your position until your competitor gives you a chance to hit, so it can be a wonderful idea to try and get your challenger to hit them in this situation!
