In extraordinarily simple terms, there are three basic plans used. You want to be agile enough to hop between game plans quickly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of creating a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at least as thick as you can achieve, to block in the opponent’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most acceptable course of action at the start of the match. You can build the wall anywhere inbetween your 11-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the game continues.

The Blitz

This is comprised of locking your home board as quick as possible while keeping your opponent on the bar. For example, if your opponent tosses an early two and shifts one piece from your 1-point to your three-point and you then toss a five-five, you will be able to play six/one 6/1 8/3 eight/three. Your challenger is then in serious calamity considering that they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have locked half your inner board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have 2 or more checkers in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor is a point consisting of at least 2 of your checkers.) It must be played when you are significantly behind as it much improves your opportunities. The best areas for anchors are towards your opponent’s smaller points and either on abutting points or with one point separating them. Timing is integral for a powerful backgame: at the end of the day, there is no reason having 2 nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break apart this straight away, while your competitor is shifting their pieces home, seeing that you don’t have any other extra pieces to shift! In this situation, it is better to have pieces on the bar so that you are able to preserve your position until your competitor gives you an opportunity to hit, so it will be a wonderful idea to attempt and get your opponent to get them in this situation!
