In extraordinarily simple terms, there are 3 chief tactics used. You must be able to switch tactics quickly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is comprised of assembling a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at a minimum as deep as you might manage, to barricade in the opponent’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most suitable strategy at the begining of the game. You can create the wall anywhere within your 11-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the game continues.

The Blitz

This consists of locking your home board as quickly as as you can while keeping your competitor on the bar. e.g., if your challenger rolls an early 2 and moves one piece from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then toss a five-five, you will be able to play six/one six/one 8/3 8/3. Your opponent is now in serious calamity considering that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have locked half your inner board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have two or more pieces in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor is a position consisting of at a minimum two of your checkers.) It must be played when you are significantly behind as this action much improves your chances. The better locations for anchor spots are near your competitor’s lower points and either on adjoining points or with one point separating them. Timing is crucial for a powerful backgame: besides, there’s no reason having two nice anchors and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then forced to dismantle this straight away, while your competitor is moving their checkers home, considering that you don’t have any other additional checkers to shift! In this case, it is more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you might preserve your position until your opposer provides you a chance to hit, so it can be a wonderful idea to attempt and get your challenger to hit them in this case!
