In extraordinarily simple terms, there are three chief game plans employed. You need to be agile enough to switch techniques instantly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This is comprised of creating a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at least as thick as you might achieve, to barricade in your competitor’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most acceptable strategy at the begining of the match. You can create the wall anyplace inbetween your eleven-point and your 2-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the match advances.

The Blitz

This involves locking your home board as quick as possible while keeping your competitor on the bar. For example, if your opponent tosses an early 2 and moves one piece from your 1-point to your three-point and you then roll a 5-5, you can play 6/1 six/one eight/three 8/3. Your opposer is now in serious difficulty since they have two checkers on the bar and you have locked half your home board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have 2 or more anchors in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor spot is a position filled by at least 2 of your checkers.) It should be used when you are significantly behind as it much improves your circumstances. The strongest areas for anchor spots are close to your competitor’s smaller points and also on abutting points or with a single point separating them. Timing is essential for a powerful backgame: after all, there is no point having 2 nice anchors and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break up this straight away, while your competitor is getting their pieces home, seeing that you do not have any other extra checkers to shift! In this case, it is more tolerable to have pieces on the bar so that you can maintain your position until your opponent gives you an opportunity to hit, so it can be a good idea to attempt and get your competitor to hit them in this situation!
