In very general terms, there are 3 general plans used. You need to be able to switch strategies instantly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This consists of creating a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you are able to manage, to barricade in your competitor’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most suitable course of action at the begining of the match. You can create the wall anywhere within your eleven-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the match progresses.

The Blitz

This is comprised of closing your home board as quick as possible while keeping your challenger on the bar. i.e., if your competitor tosses an early 2 and moves one piece from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then toss a 5-5, you can play six/one 6/1 eight/three eight/three. Your opposer is now in serious trouble because they have two checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have two or more anchors in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor spot is a position consisting of at a minimum 2 of your pieces.) It needs to be used when you are decidedly behind as this strategy much improves your chances. The better areas for anchor spots are near your opponent’s lower points and also on adjoining points or with one point separating them. Timing is critical for an effectual backgame: at the end of the day, there’s no reason having 2 nice anchors and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then required to dismantle this right away, while your challenger is moving their pieces home, because you don’t have other spare pieces to move! In this case, it is more tolerable to have checkers on the bar so that you are able to maintain your position up until your opponent gives you an opportunity to hit, so it may be a wonderful idea to try and get your opponent to get them in this situation!
