In very simple terms, there are 3 basic game plans employed. You must be able to hop between game plans instantly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This consists of building a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at a minimum as thick as you can achieve, to barricade in the competitor’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most suitable procedure at the begining of the match. You can create the wall anyplace inbetween your 11-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the game advances.

The Blitz

This is comprised of closing your home board as fast as as you can while keeping your opposer on the bar. i.e., if your opponent tosses an early 2 and shifts one checker from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then toss a five-five, you can play six/one 6/1 8/3 eight/three. Your opponent is now in big-time trouble due to the fact that they have two pieces on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have two or higher pieces in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor is a point consisting of at least two of your checkers.) It must be used when you are significantly behind as it much improves your chances. The strongest areas for anchor spots are close to your competitor’s lower points and also on adjacent points or with one point separating them. Timing is crucial for an effective backgame: besides, there’s no reason having two nice anchors and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then required to break apart this right away, while your competitor is shifting their pieces home, seeing that you don’t have any other additional pieces to shift! In this situation, it is more tolerable to have checkers on the bar so that you can preserve your position up until your challenger provides you a chance to hit, so it may be a good idea to attempt and get your opposer to get them in this situation!
