In astonishingly general terms, there are three basic strategies employed. You need to be agile enough to hop between game plans quickly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This comprises of creating a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at least as thick as you might achieve, to lock in the competitor’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most adequate strategy at the start of the match. You can assemble the wall anywhere inbetween your 11-point and your 2-point and then move it into your home board as the game advances.

The Blitz

This is comprised of locking your home board as quick as possible while keeping your opposer on the bar. i.e., if your opposer tosses an early two and shifts one piece from your one-point to your 3-point and you then roll a five-five, you can play 6/1 6/1 eight/three 8/3. Your competitor is now in serious calamity considering that they have two pieces on the bar and you have locked half your inside board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have 2 or higher checkers in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a position consisting of at least two of your checkers.) It must be employed when you are decidedly behind as it greatly improves your opportunities. The strongest areas for anchors are close to your competitor’s lower points and also on adjoining points or with a single point separating them. Timing is integral for an effectual backgame: after all, there is no point having two nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break up this right away, while your challenger is moving their pieces home, seeing that you don’t have other spare checkers to move! In this situation, it’s more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you can preserve your position up until your challenger provides you an opportunity to hit, so it may be an excellent idea to try and get your opponent to get them in this situation!
