In exceptionally general terms, there are 3 fundamental game plans employed. You need to be able to switch game plans quickly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This consists of building a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at least as deep as you are able to achieve, to barricade in the competitor’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most adequate procedure at the start of the game. You can build the wall anyplace between your 11-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the match advances.

The Blitz

This involves locking your home board as fast as as you can while keeping your opponent on the bar. For example, if your competitor tosses an early 2 and shifts one piece from your 1-point to your three-point and you then toss a 5-5, you will be able to play 6/1 6/1 eight/three eight/three. Your opposer is then in big-time difficulty seeing that they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have locked half your inner board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have two or higher anchors in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor spot is a point occupied by at a minimum 2 of your checkers.) It should be employed when you are extremely behind as it greatly improves your circumstances. The better areas for anchor spots are towards your competitor’s smaller points and either on abutting points or with one point separating them. Timing is critical for an effective backgame: after all, there’s no point having 2 nice anchors and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then forced to dismantle this straight away, while your opponent is getting their checkers home, seeing that you do not have any other extra pieces to move! In this situation, it’s more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you can maintain your position until your competitor gives you an opportunity to hit, so it can be a good idea to attempt and get your opponent to hit them in this case!
