In extraordinarily general terms, there are three chief plans employed. You need to be able to switch tactics instantly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves building a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at least as deep as you can achieve, to barricade in your competitor’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most suitable tactic at the begining of the game. You can create the wall anyplace within your eleven-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the game progresses.

The Blitz

This involves closing your home board as fast as as you can while keeping your opponent on the bar. i.e., if your competitor tosses an early 2 and moves one checker from your 1-point to your three-point and you then toss a 5-5, you are able to play 6/1 six/one eight/three 8/3. Your challenger is now in big-time calamity because they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inner board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have 2 or more anchors in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a point filled by at a minimum 2 of your pieces.) It must be played when you are extremely behind as it much improves your opportunities. The better areas for anchor spots are towards your opponent’s smaller points and either on abutting points or with one point in between. Timing is critical for a competent backgame: besides, there is no point having 2 nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break apart this straight away, while your competitor is getting their checkers home, seeing that you don’t have any other additional pieces to move! In this case, it’s more tolerable to have checkers on the bar so that you are able to preserve your position up until your opposer gives you an opportunity to hit, so it may be a great idea to try and get your competitor to hit them in this situation!
