In extraordinarily general terms, there are three fundamental tactics used. You need to be agile enough to switch tactics quickly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of building a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at least as deep as you can achieve, to lock in your competitor’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most suitable procedure at the start of the match. You can build the wall anyplace inbetween your eleven-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the match progresses.

The Blitz

This is composed of locking your home board as fast as possible while keeping your competitor on the bar. For example, if your competitor tosses an early 2 and shifts one checker from your 1-point to your three-point and you then roll a five-five, you can play six/one 6/1 eight/three 8/3. Your challenger is then in serious dire straits since they have two checkers on the bar and you have locked half your inner board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have 2 or higher pieces in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a position filled by at a minimum 2 of your pieces.) It must be played when you are significantly behind as it greatly improves your circumstances. The better places for anchor spots are near your competitor’s smaller points and also on adjoining points or with a single point in between. Timing is critical for an effectual backgame: besides, there’s no reason having two nice anchors and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to dismantle this right away, while your challenger is shifting their pieces home, because you do not have any other additional checkers to move! In this situation, it’s more tolerable to have checkers on the bar so that you can maintain your position up until your opponent gives you an opportunity to hit, so it will be an excellent idea to try and get your opponent to hit them in this case!
