In exceptionally simple terms, there are three main game plans used. You must be able to switch game plans quickly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves assembling a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at least as deep as you are able to manage, to lock in your opponent’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most acceptable strategy at the start of the match. You can create the wall anyplace between your 11-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the game advances.

The Blitz

This consists of closing your home board as quick as possible while keeping your challenger on the bar. e.g., if your competitor rolls an early 2 and moves one checker from your 1-point to your three-point and you then roll a five-five, you will be able to play 6/1 six/one eight/three eight/three. Your challenger is now in serious difficulty considering that they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have locked half your inner board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have 2 or higher checkers in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor is a point consisting of at a minimum two of your pieces.) It would be played when you are significantly behind as this plan much improves your opportunities. The strongest areas for anchors are towards your competitor’s lower points and either on adjoining points or with a single point in between. Timing is important for an effective backgame: besides, there is no reason having two nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break up this right away, while your challenger is getting their pieces home, taking into account that you don’t have any other spare checkers to shift! In this situation, it’s more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you are able to preserve your position until your challenger gives you a chance to hit, so it will be a wonderful idea to attempt and get your competitor to hit them in this situation!
