In very simple terms, there are 3 general game plans used. You need to be able to switch tactics instantly as the action of the match unfolds.
The Blockade
This consists of creating a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at least as deep as you might manage, to block in the competitor’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most acceptable tactic at the start of the match. You can assemble the wall anyplace within your eleven-point and your 2-point and then move it into your home board as the game advances.
The Blitz
This is composed of closing your home board as quickly as as you can while keeping your opposer on the bar. e.g., if your competitor rolls an early two and shifts one checker from your one-point to your three-point and you then toss a five-five, you will be able to play 6/1 six/one eight/three 8/3. Your opposer is then in big-time dire straits taking into account that they have two checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!
The Backgame
This plan is where you have 2 or more checkers in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a position consisting of at least two of your checkers.) It needs to be played when you are extremely behind as this plan greatly improves your chances. The better areas for anchors are near your competitor’s lower points and also on adjoining points or with one point separating them. Timing is important for a powerful backgame: after all, there’s no point having two nice anchors and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then required to dismantle this right away, while your challenger is getting their pieces home, taking into account that you do not have any other extra checkers to move! In this situation, it is better to have pieces on the bar so that you can maintain your position up until your opponent gives you an opportunity to hit, so it may be a good idea to try and get your opposer to hit them in this situation!
