In astonishingly general terms, there are three fundamental plans employed. You need to be able to hop between tactics almost instantly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves assembling a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you might achieve, to block in the opponent’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most suitable course of action at the start of the match. You can create the wall anyplace within your 11-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the game continues.

The Blitz

This is composed of locking your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your opposer on the bar. i.e., if your competitor tosses an early 2 and moves one checker from your 1-point to your three-point and you then toss a five-five, you are able to play six/one 6/1 eight/three eight/three. Your challenger is now in big-time dire straits due to the fact that they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have closed half your inner board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have two or higher anchors in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a point consisting of at a minimum 2 of your pieces.) It would be played when you are decidedly behind as this plan much improves your chances. The better areas for anchors are towards your competitor’s smaller points and either on abutting points or with a single point in between. Timing is critical for an effective backgame: at the end of the day, there is no reason having two nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break down this straight away, while your opposer is getting their pieces home, because you do not have any other additional checkers to move! In this case, it’s better to have pieces on the bar so that you might preserve your position up till your challenger provides you an opportunity to hit, so it may be a great idea to attempt and get your challenger to hit them in this case!
