In exceptionally simple terms, there are 3 chief game plans employed. You need to be able to hop between tactics instantly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This consists of building a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at least as thick as you can manage, to block in your opponent’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most suitable strategy at the begining of the game. You can build the wall anyplace within your 11-point and your two-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the match progresses.

The Blitz

This consists of closing your home board as fast as possible while keeping your opponent on the bar. For example, if your opponent rolls an early two and shifts one checker from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then roll a five-five, you can play 6/1 six/one 8/3 8/3. Your competitor is then in serious dire straits considering that they have two pieces on the bar and you have locked half your inside board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have two or higher anchors in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a point consisting of at least two of your checkers.) It needs to be employed when you are significantly behind as this plan greatly improves your opportunities. The better places for anchors are near your opponent’s smaller points and either on adjoining points or with a single point in between. Timing is important for a powerful backgame: at the end of the day, there’s no point having two nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then required to dismantle this right away, while your competitor is moving their pieces home, seeing that you do not have any other spare checkers to shift! In this situation, it’s better to have checkers on the bar so that you might maintain your position until your challenger provides you a chance to hit, so it will be a wonderful idea to attempt and get your opposer to get them in this situation!
