In very general terms, there are 3 main game plans employed. You want to be able to switch strategies almost instantly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves creating a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at a minimum as thick as you are able to manage, to barricade in the competitor’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most suitable procedure at the begining of the game. You can build the wall anyplace inbetween your 11-point and your 2-point and then move it into your home board as the match continues.

The Blitz

This is composed of locking your home board as quickly as possible while keeping your competitor on the bar. For example, if your opponent rolls an early two and shifts one checker from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then roll a 5-5, you are able to play six/one 6/1 8/3 8/3. Your opposer is now in big-time trouble taking into account that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have two or more anchors in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor is a position occupied by at least two of your checkers.) It needs to be employed when you are decidedly behind as this strategy much improves your opportunities. The best areas for anchors are close to your competitor’s lower points and either on adjacent points or with one point separating them. Timing is integral for an effectual backgame: at the end of the day, there’s no reason having two nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then required to break down this right away, while your opponent is shifting their checkers home, considering that you don’t have any other extra pieces to shift! In this case, it’s better to have pieces on the bar so that you are able to maintain your position up till your competitor gives you an opportunity to hit, so it will be a great idea to attempt and get your opponent to get them in this case!
