In extraordinarily general terms, there are three main game plans employed. You must be able to switch strategies instantly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of creating a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at least as thick as you can achieve, to block in your opponent’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most acceptable tactic at the start of the game. You can create the wall anywhere within your 11-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the game advances.

The Blitz

This is comprised of closing your home board as quick as possible while keeping your opponent on the bar. i.e., if your opposer rolls an early 2 and shifts one checker from your 1-point to your three-point and you then toss a 5-5, you can play 6/1 6/1 8/3 8/3. Your opposer is now in big-time trouble seeing that they have two checkers on the bar and you have closed half your home board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have two or more pieces in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor is a position occupied by at least 2 of your checkers.) It must be played when you are significantly behind as it greatly improves your chances. The better areas for anchors are close to your opponent’s smaller points and also on adjoining points or with one point separating them. Timing is important for a powerful backgame: besides, there’s no reason having two nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break up this right away, while your opponent is moving their checkers home, seeing that you do not have other extra pieces to shift! In this case, it’s more tolerable to have checkers on the bar so that you might preserve your position up until your opposer gives you an opportunity to hit, so it may be a great idea to try and get your competitor to hit them in this situation!
