In extraordinarily simple terms, there are three main techniques used. You must be able to hop between techniques instantly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of assembling a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at least as thick as you are able to manage, to block in the opponent’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most adequate procedure at the begining of the match. You can build the wall anywhere between your eleven-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the match continues.

The Blitz

This is comprised of closing your home board as quick as possible while keeping your opposer on the bar. e.g., if your opponent rolls an early 2 and moves one piece from your one-point to your 3-point and you then toss a five-five, you will be able to play six/one six/one 8/3 8/3. Your opponent is then in big-time calamity considering that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inner board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have two or more anchors in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor is a position consisting of at least 2 of your checkers.) It should be used when you are decidedly behind as this plan much improves your opportunities. The best locations for anchor spots are close to your competitor’s smaller points and also on abutting points or with one point in between. Timing is critical for a competent backgame: besides, there is no reason having two nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break down this right away, while your opposer is moving their pieces home, considering that you do not have any other additional checkers to move! In this situation, it’s more tolerable to have pieces on the bar so that you are able to maintain your position up till your competitor provides you a chance to hit, so it can be a great idea to try and get your challenger to hit them in this situation!
