In exceptionally general terms, there are three general strategies used. You need to be able to switch techniques instantly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This consists of assembling a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at least as deep as you might achieve, to block in the opponent’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most adequate tactic at the start of the match. You can build the wall anywhere between your eleven-point and your 2-point and then move it into your home board as the match advances.

The Blitz

This is comprised of locking your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your challenger on the bar. For example, if your opponent rolls an early 2 and moves one piece from your one-point to your 3-point and you then roll a 5-5, you are able to play six/one 6/1 8/3 8/3. Your opponent is then in serious difficulty considering that they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have locked half your home board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have 2 or more anchors in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor is a point filled by at least 2 of your pieces.) It must be played when you are extremely behind as this action much improves your opportunities. The best places for anchor spots are towards your opponent’s smaller points and either on abutting points or with a single point separating them. Timing is essential for a powerful backgame: after all, there’s no point having two nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to dismantle this straight away, while your opposer is shifting their checkers home, taking into account that you don’t have any other extra checkers to move! In this case, it’s better to have checkers on the bar so that you can maintain your position up until your opposer gives you an opportunity to hit, so it may be a great idea to attempt and get your opponent to get them in this case!
