In very simple terms, there are 3 basic plans employed. You need to be agile enough to hop between techniques almost instantly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This comprises of creating a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at a minimum as deep as you can achieve, to lock in your competitor’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most adequate procedure at the start of the game. You can build the wall anywhere within your eleven-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the match progresses.

The Blitz

This consists of closing your home board as quickly as as you can while keeping your challenger on the bar. e.g., if your opposer rolls an early two and moves one piece from your 1-point to your three-point and you then toss a five-five, you will be able to play six/one 6/1 8/3 8/3. Your competitor is then in serious trouble considering that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inner board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have 2 or higher pieces in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor is a point filled by at least two of your checkers.) It should be employed when you are extremely behind as this plan greatly improves your chances. The better places for anchor spots are near your competitor’s smaller points and also on adjoining points or with a single point in between. Timing is integral for a competent backgame: at the end of the day, there is no point having 2 nice anchors and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break apart this straight away, while your challenger is getting their pieces home, considering that you don’t have any other spare pieces to move! In this case, it’s more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you can preserve your position up until your opponent gives you a chance to hit, so it can be a great idea to attempt and get your competitor to hit them in this situation!
