In astonishingly general terms, there are 3 chief strategies used. You need to be able to hop between techniques almost instantly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of building a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at a minimum as thick as you might manage, to barricade in the opponent’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most adequate procedure at the begining of the match. You can assemble the wall anyplace within your 11-point and your 2-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the game continues.

The Blitz

This is comprised of locking your home board as fast as possible while keeping your opposer on the bar. i.e., if your opponent rolls an early 2 and shifts one checker from your one-point to your 3-point and you then toss a five-five, you are able to play six/one six/one 8/3 8/3. Your competitor is now in big-time dire straits considering that they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have 2 or higher pieces in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a point filled by at least 2 of your checkers.) It needs to be used when you are significantly behind as this strategy much improves your chances. The better places for anchor spots are towards your opponent’s smaller points and also on adjacent points or with a single point separating them. Timing is crucial for a powerful backgame: besides, there is no point having 2 nice anchors and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then required to dismantle this right away, while your competitor is moving their pieces home, because you don’t have any other spare pieces to shift! In this case, it is better to have pieces on the bar so that you can preserve your position until your opponent gives you a chance to hit, so it can be a good idea to try and get your competitor to hit them in this situation!
