In exceptionally general terms, there are 3 chief tactics employed. You need to be able to hop between game plans almost instantly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of building a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at a minimum as thick as you can achieve, to block in the opponent’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most adequate tactic at the start of the game. You can assemble the wall anyplace between your 11-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the game advances.

The Blitz

This consists of closing your home board as quickly as possible while keeping your opposer on the bar. i.e., if your challenger rolls an early 2 and shifts one piece from your one-point to your three-point and you then roll a 5-5, you are able to play 6/1 six/one eight/three 8/3. Your opposer is then in serious trouble taking into account that they have two pieces on the bar and you have locked half your inner board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have two or higher checkers in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a position consisting of at least two of your checkers.) It needs to be played when you are significantly behind as it greatly improves your circumstances. The best areas for anchors are towards your competitor’s lower points and either on adjoining points or with one point in between. Timing is important for an effectual backgame: after all, there’s no point having 2 nice anchors and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then required to break down this straight away, while your challenger is shifting their checkers home, considering that you do not have other spare pieces to move! In this case, it’s more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you can maintain your position up till your opponent provides you a chance to hit, so it may be a great idea to try and get your opponent to hit them in this situation!
